A landmark global review has just revealed a massive gap in public health: more than three-quarters of the global population are failing to meet the recommended intake of Omega-3 (EPA and DHA).
This collaborative research from the University of East Anglia, the University of Southampton, and Holland & Barrett is the first to map out omega-3 guidelines across every stage of life.
The verdict?
Most of us are falling short, and the consequences for our long-term health are too big to ignore.
The "Omega Gap" Matters at Every Life Stage:
🤰 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲: Crucial for reducing pre-term birth and supporting an infant's brain and eye development.
❤️ 𝐀𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬: Essential for maintaining cardiovascular health and a robust immune system.
🧠 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲: Higher intakes are associated with a reduced risk of depression, cognitive decline, biological age, and even Alzheimer’s disease.
Why is it so hard to hit the target?
The review found that the most common recommendation for healthy adults is 250mg of combined EPA and DHA per day.
However, achieving this through diet alone, especially with modern concerns around sustainable fishing and low seafood consumption, is a major barrier for millions.
As Prof Anne Marie Minihane, from UEA’s Norwich Medical School, explains:
"𝘞𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘣𝘪𝘨 𝘨𝘢𝘱𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵'𝘴 𝘢𝘥𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘶𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘦. 𝘛𝘰 𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘨𝘢𝘱, 𝘸𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘦𝘳, 𝘴𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘯𝘶𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴, 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘴 𝘦𝘯𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘨𝘢-3𝘴 𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴. 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘫𝘰𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴."
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲: If you aren't eating oily fish such as salmon or mackerel at least twice a week, you are likely part of the 76% missing out on this vital nutrients’ protection.
Whether through diet or high-quality supplementation, closing your "Omega Gap" is one of the simplest ways to improve both your long- and short-term health.
