Limited UK military weight. Under huge domestic pressure from all political quarters. Not prepared to properly fund defence, and so limited options to provide promises of air defences, etc. He'll try and act the middleman but he's in a weak position. Questionable at best.

8 April 1904. Britain and France signed a diplomatic agreement later known as the Entente Cordiale, which mainly resolved long-standing colonial disputes in North Africa. It established a new diplomatic understanding between two countries that were previously bitter rivals.

7/ Emir Mahmud was captured by Sudanese troops in the Egyptian Brigade. The decisive victory cleared the way for Kitchener’s continued advance up the Nile, leading toward the final defeat of the Mahdist state later in 1898.

6/ After just 45 minutes, the battle was over. Osman Digna escaped south with a few thousand survivors, but most of Mahmud’s army was killed or captured in the brutal fighting.

1/ On 8 April 1898, the Battle of Atbara saw a combined British-Egyptian army advance south along the Nile to crush the Mahdist state in Sudan. Emir Mahmud Ahmad led around 10,000 Mahdist warriors north to stop Herbert Kitchener’s forces.

Sir George Stuart White died in 1912 and was buried in Broughshane, Northern Ireland, leaving a legacy of gallant service and unwavering leadership. 7/7

Promoted to Field Marshal in 1903, he later served as Governor of Gibraltar and first Governor of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. 6/7
