California's snowpack has collapsed at a pace never seen before in late winter, the fastest late February–March melt on record. Spring snowpack is now on track to be the second smallest since records began in 1950, trailing only 2015, the lowest snowpack year in the Sierra Nevada in at least the last 500 years. Phillips Station, the state's most iconic snowpack measurement site, is expected to show bare ground on April 1, the date that has historically marked peak snowpack.

Nepal faced a major environmental crisis in the 1970s as forests were degraded by grazing and fuelwood harvesting. After a 1993 law handed forest management to local communities, forest cover rebounded dramatically, rising from about 26% in 1992 to 45% in 2016 through community-led protection and natural regeneration. ...And, again today, a huge swath of the continental United States clear across from the Pacific Coast to Mississippi River is experiencing all-time March monthly record heat. Some locations are so hot that they are actually exceeding *April* all-time record highs. Incredible.

A new United States national temperature record for March of 110 degrees was provisionally set near Martinez Lake, Arizona on Thursday.
