This weekend marks the 8th year the two-child limit to benefit payments has been in place. 1 child every 13 mins falls into poverty because of this policy. The govt must scrap it in the upcoming Child Poverty Strategy. @EndChildPoverty

“The forthcoming Child Poverty Strategy must go beyond sticking-plaster solutions. We need to see real policy change that addresses the root issue and protects and supports low income households – for example, lifting the two-child limit and benefit cap."

🚨 The @DWPgovuk has released its annual Households Below Average Income statistics, which show that child poverty has reached a record high – with 4.5 million children in the UK now below the poverty line. This figure is up from 3.6 million in 2010/11.

🚨 CONFIRMED: Social security for disabled people has been slashed in the Spring Statement. This is cruel, irresponsible and shameful. People at food banks are already telling us that they’re terrified about how they will survive.

As Rick Burgess of the @GMCDP wrote in our recent conference bulletin, "We urgently need to understand that sufficient income that covers the extra costs of disability is an investment in a socially just and exciting future." Read in full 👉 resolvepoverty.org/wp-content/upl…

⚠️ Today’s announced cuts to #DisabilityBenefits risk plunging more people into poverty. The govt’s commitment to ‘break down barriers to opportunity’ is at odds with policies that reduce income for disabled people, who are more likely to experience poverty and barriers to work.

Well it’s clear that I made the right decision to leave the Labour Party after 41 years membership! Attacking the most vulnerable is never the answer! Tax the mega rich and protect those in most need! #welfare Principles over Party I know whose side I am on! Heartbreaking!

Some thoughts ahead of the Chancellor's #SpringStatement later today. Sticking to arbitrary fiscal rules is a choice & cutting spending is unlikely to deliver savings in the long run. Follow @NEF for updates and commentary during the day.

Quite an extraordinary story. And one that rather gives the lie to the idea that the Government’s cuts to disability benefits were driven by a moral mission about work. It’s about fiscal rules…
Steven Swinford@Steven_Swinford

Exclusive with @Smyth_Chris   Rachel Reeves will announce further welfare cuts after the Office for Budget Responsibility told ministers their benefit reforms will save £1.6billion less than planned   The OBR rejected ministers' £5billion welfare savings estimate, putting it at £3.4billion   Reeves will announce that Universal Credit incapacity benefits for new claimants, which were halved in Kendall's original package, will now be frozen until 2030 as well rather than rising in line with inflation There will also be a small reduction in the basic rate of UC in 2029 The moves will raise an extra £500milloon   Govt source says that the new cuts are in keeping with green paper thetimes.com/article/f80da8…

Another scandal that govts of all colours have lacked courage to tackle. Council tax is outdated, regressive, and grossly unfair to those living in poorer regions and in cheaper properties. It needs updating and making proportional to current value thetimes.com/article/642218…
