Today in 1954 the last execution was carried out by the Irish state. Michael Manning, a 25-year-old carter from Johnsgate in Limerick, was hanged at Mountjoy Prison in Dublin. He was the 29th and final person to be executed in the Republic of Ireland. The "hang house" still stands on the prison grounds. The man who placed the noose was Albert Pierrepoint, an Englishman who had travelled from Britain, where he served as one of three Senior Executioners. His fee was £5 plus expenses. Pierrepoint's uncle Tom had carried out most of Ireland's executions between independence and the end of the Second World War, and Albert had first assisted him at Mountjoy in December 1932. Being a hangman carried a stigma and was traditionally a family business. Pierrepoint is reported to have remarked afterwards that he loved hanging Irish men, because they always went quietly. They were Christian men, he said, so sincerely believed they were going to a better place. Manning's crime was brutal. On the evening of 18 November 1953, Catherine Cooper a 65-year-old nurse at Barrington's Hospital, was walking from Castletroy towards Limerick city when she was attacked, sexually assaulted, and murdered on the Dublin Road. Her body was found in a quarry nearby. She had choked on tufts of grass stuffed into her mouth to stop her from screaming. Manning never denied what he had done. He had spent that day drinking through several Limerick pubs, having been refused service at the Munster Fair Tavern, and eventually finding his way to The Black Swan in Annacotty. Making his way home on foot, he came upon the unfortunate woman walking alone. In his own words, suddenly lost his head and jumped on her, remembering nothing more until the lights of a car shone on him. His trial opened on 15 February 1954 and lasted three days. The defence argued insanity, and pointed to a family history of mental illness and a low IQ that one later researcher felt bordered on intellectual disability. The judge directed the jury to set that aside. Manning had, after all, stuffed the grass into Cooper's mouth with deliberate purpose. The jury took three hours. He admitted the attack but had pleaded not guilty to murder. The distinction mattered little. Murder carried a mandatory death sentence, and no amount of petitioning was going to change that. Members of Catherine Cooper's own family signed a clemency petition on his behalf. Manning wrote to the Minister for Justice himself, in terms that are hard to read. He said he was not afraid to die, that he was fully prepared to go before his God, but that he was asking for mercy on behalf of his wife, who was young and close to giving birth to their child. His wife was 22. His child was born a few weeks after he was hanged. On the Sunday before his execution, friends came from Limerick to visit. They went to Mass and received Holy Communion. Then they played a game of handball. On the Tuesday after Easter, he was taken from his cell and hanged at 8 o'clock in the morning. His body was buried in an unmarked grave in the prison yard. His widow wrote to the Governor of Mountjoy afterwards to thank him for the kindness shown to her husband. She applied for a death certificate so that she could receive a widow's pension. Later that same year, Brendan Behan's first play, The Quare Fellow, premiered at the Pike Theatre in Dublin. Set on the eve of an execution in Mountjoy, and while Behan never names Manning directly, the play helped shift public opinion on capital punishment. The Criminal Justice Act of 1964 restricted the death penalty to those convicted of murdering Gardaí, prison officers, or diplomats. No further executions took place. It was abolished in 1990 and removed from the constitution by referendum in 2001. I wonder were there another referendum today on its reintroduction for certain crimes how the results would go? The RSPCA is looking for a man after a ginger cat was found taped inside a pet carrier, wrapped in a bin bag, and thrown over a fence into a garden in Basildon, Essex. The three-year-old cat was taken to a vet, where it was found to have no injuries but was clearly stressed. A CCTV image of the man, described as white and wearing glasses, a dark jacket, and a light blue T-shirt, has been released as investigators appeal for witnesses.

London Labour’s executive committee includes Izzy Lenga. In a now-deleted Facebook photo, Lenga is pictured in a military uniform, wrapped in an Israeli flag and carrying an assault rifle. Evidence suggests Lenga may have taken part in Marva, a two-month “IDF intro” course.

And then in the United States they will be surprised to discover that if they leave NATO, they will also be asked to leave their military bases in Europe. The next realization will come when it turns out that without them, it is extremely difficult to supply their military forces in the Middle East. Everyone will be surprised and shocked.

The smashed statue of Christ crucified is just the tip of an iceberg of Israeli anti-Christian bigotry. Here's my report from occupied east Jerusalem two weeks ago:

CALL TO ACTIVISM

🚨THIS IS THE BEST CLIP OF HIS ENTIRE RALLY. 🔥 JON OSSOFF: “Did you hear what Trump said two weeks ago? Quote, “It's not possible,” the president said, “for us to take care of daycare, Medicaid, or Medicare. He said we can only afford to fund war.  Then released a budget demanding $1.5 trillion or the Pentagon next year alone — paid for by ending utility assistance for families, canceling affordable housing programs, and cutting cancer research … all to fund a huge increase for the military industrial complex. Because draft-dodging Donald loves sending other people’s children to war." Boom.

🚨 OMG. Ossoff just delivered a masterclass on DISMANTLING Trump: “Trump…said we can only fund war then released a $1.5 trillion budget for the Pentagon …Because draft-dodging Donald loves sending other people's children to war.” DAMN. 🔥

Iran Owns the Strait of Hormuz Legally & Geographically The Strait of Hormuz is not international waters. At its narrowest point, the entire waterway lies within the territorial seas of Iran & Oman, each country’s sovereign 12-nautical-mile zone. Iran has never ratified UNCLOS & does not accept the “transit passage” rules Washington demands. The irony? The United States itself has never ratified UNCLOS either. Iran, however, applies the older innocent-passage regime under the 1958 Geneva Convention, which gives coastal states clear legal authority to regulate &, when their security is threatened, restrict or suspend shipping through their own waters. That gives Iran a solid legal basis to impose strict control, fire warning shots, or restrict vessels (especially those linked to aggressors like the US or Israel) in response to the American naval blockade. In short: Iran is not “pirating” an open sea. It is exercising its full legal & sovereign right to control & defend the Strait against an American naval blockade. Following the recent ceasefire, Iran has moved to a new phase of full sovereign management. It is now actively vetting every vessel, requiring full details on crew, cargo & destination, while restricting hostile or military shipping & prioritising friendly traffic. Tehran is also imposing transit tolls (up to $2 million per supertanker) paid in non-dollar currencies, finally turning the geographic asset that has always been theirs into a direct economic benefit. This is not “piracy.” Washington hates this reality & insists on an absolute right of passage, but legally this is a sovereign nation exercising its full legal & geographic rights over waters that are literally on its doorstep, against an American naval blockade. Trump can scream “violation” & threaten to bomb every power plant & bridge all he wants. The map, the law, & geography are all on Iran’s side. The Strait belongs to Iran. All the bluster in the world won’t change that.

LABOUR IS DESPERATE BECAUSE THEIR TALENT POOL IS PRETTY EMPTY, BUT STARMER HAS TO GO. It’s pretty mindboggling that Labour MPs haven’t clocked that Starmer’s leading them down the path to annihilation. That there’s no credible stalking horse waiting in the wings is unbelievable after two years of his catastrophic leadership - if you can call it leadership. They seem like rabbits caught in the headlights. And all across social media there are these pathetic little bleats from Starmer loyalists (apparently they do exist!) praising the Downing Street dufus. It’s all a bit surreal if not sad. What’s certain is that Starmer will come to the House today and do what he’s proved to be very good at - lie. He needs to be taken apart piece by piece. He should leave with only one option open to him - resignation. Let’s see what happens!

🇸🇾🇺🇸 The empire just packed up and left Syria with a straight face. After 11 years of “fighting terrorism,” the last U.S. troops rolled out of Qasrak air base in Hasakah yesterday. Syrian army units and SDF fighters moved in together while American convoys torched equipment on the way out — the classic imperial exit: burn what you can’t steal. The man now running Syria as president is Ahmed al-Sharaa or better known to the world as Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, the former leader of al-Qaeda’s Syrian branch (Jabhat al-Nusra/HTS). Yes, the same guy the U.S. once put a $10 million fake bounty on. The same networks Washington spent over a decade pretending to bomb, sanctioning, and calling an existential threat. Now they hand the country over to him and call it mission accomplished. Eleven years of bases, drones, and endless “counter-terror” talk… only to leave the keys with a rebranded Salafist jihadist who was literally once on their own terrorist list. That’s the empire admitting its proxies are perfectly capable of running the show once the Stars and Stripes are gone. America isn't truly leaving Syria. It just stopped pretending.
THE ISLANDER@IslanderWORLD

🇺🇸🏴‍☠️🇮🇷 Ex CIA veteran Larry Johnson just looked the empire dead in the eye and called its bluff. Larry Johnson didn’t mince words: the U.S. strike and boarding of that Iranian vessel was an act of war... illegal, and indefensible under any reading of international law. No “routine interdiction.” No “sanctions enforcement.” Because the only mechanism for legal sanctions is the UNSC.
A guided missile destroyer opens fire on a commercial ship in international waters, then sends Marines swarming aboard. That’s armed piracy by the world’s wannabe sheriff. Washington crossed the Rubicon the moment it put holes in that hull. Tehran knows it. The world just watched it happen in real time.
This is the empire openly declaring war on the high seas and daring anyone to call it what it is. Iran will call it what it is with its full arsenal of kinetic business cards delivered to targets it's already named.
