“Nearly 1 in 9 patients receiving prescription opioids were still chronic opioid users in 2023, highlighting the importance of developing and implementing evidence-based guidelines for chronic pain management,” said Thuy Nguyen, assistant professor of Health Management and Policy at @UMichSPH and the paper’s first author.

From 2015 to 2023, long-term #opioid therapy declined by 24% in the US, but 4.2 million patients remained on long-term opioids, with trends toward older age and increased #Medicare coverage. ja.ma/47WVmvv

Michigan’s new statewide smartphone restrictions for K–12 schools start in August 2026—but many districts already have policies in place. What do they look like? @JustinHeinzePhD and @ejthulin of @UMichSPH co-authored a new article analyzing cellphone rules across 779 Michigan public and charter school districts (95% of districts statewide). Key trends: about half use “bell-to-bell” limits, half use schedule-based limits, and enforcement ranges from “no show” (phones out of sight) to lockers, classroom collection, centralized collection, and lockable pouches—with notable differences by district type and geography. This #NationalPublicHealthWeek, we pause to honor the legacy of Dr. Barbara Israel, Professor Emerita of Health Behavior and Health Equity. She was a pioneer of Community-Based Participatory Research, and the field of public health is forever changed by her presence in it. Dr. Israel dedicated more than 40 years to Michigan Public Health — and to the communities of Detroit who were her partners, not just her subjects. As the founder of the Detroit Community-Academic Urban Research Center (@DetroitURC), she helped establish a gold standard for community-based participatory research: one built on power-sharing, trust, and a deep belief that communities hold the answers to their own health challenges. Her research tackled childhood asthma, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and the social and environmental conditions that drive health inequities. Her students are now carrying that work across the country and around the world. And through the Barbara A. Israel Detroit Urban Research Center Endowed Internship Fund she established before her passing, the next generation of researchers will continue doing the same. We honor Dr. Israel's legacy — and recommit to the values she lived: equity, partnership, and the belief that public health belongs to everyone. Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease of childhood—and it hits hardest where access to care is limited. With a new $2.1M HRSA grant, @UMich's @UMichDentistry and @UMichSPH will train pediatric dentistry residents to better address oral health inequities. Through the program, every pediatric dentistry resident will earn a Certificate in Social Epidemiology, building skills in data, social determinants of health, and health equity. This is interdisciplinary training with real-world impact—preparing clinician-leaders to bridge science, practice, and policy to improve child health. Rural health care is fragile—and Medicaid is a major part of what keeps clinics and hospitals open. In the newest episode of the Population Healthy podcast, @UMichSPH health policy researcher Michael Shepherd breaks down how recent Medicaid changes could ripple through rural communities: access to emergency care, OB-GYN and behavioral health services, and even local jobs and economic stability.
