August Kowalczyk was a Polish actor, theatre, television and film director and the last survivor of a breakout of prisoners from Auschwitz Concentration Camp on June 10, 1942. He was one of 400 Polish prisoners chosen for a penal colony of which only 9 would survive. He then fought as a soldier in the Home Army. He passed away in 2002.

#OTD in 1944, the Battle of Falaise, the final act of “Operation Overlord”, began. The 1st 🇵🇱 Armoured Division of General Stanisław Maczek played a critical role in the battle, breaking the German defence in Normandy and opening the way for the Allies to liberate France. “The Germans were trapped as if in a bottle; you were the cork in that bottle,” said 🇬🇧 Field Marshal B. Montgomery to the Poles. After the war, Maczek made Scotland his home, as communists in Poland took his citizenship. The British government did not consider him to be an Allied soldier. Denied combatant rights and a military pension in the UK, he worked as a bartender in the Learmonth Hotel until the 1960s to scrape a living. Read more: britishpoles.uk/polish-wartime…
