Jean-François Clervoy

Under a contract signed with the European Space Agency (@esa), Venturi Space has been conducting, since 1 January 2026, a risk-reduction study focusing on three key technologies for future lunar rovers. Venturi Space will be able to test the hyper-deformable wheels, high-performance batteries, suspension system, and the egress system (the system enabling the rover to descend from the lander), using its MONA LUNA rover as the test platform for this campaign. The test campaigns will take place within the LUNA building, jointly developed by ESA and the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (@DLR_en). 🚀 Happy launch anniversary to STS-103, the third mission of ESA astronaut Jean-François Clervoy, which lifted off on 19 December 1999! It was the 96th Space Shuttle launch and the 27th flight of Discovery. This mission was truly special – a dream for any astronaut: a rendezvous with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, orbiting 600 km above Earth! 🛰 (For comparison, the International Space Station orbits at about 400 km.) Originally scheduled for mid-October, the launch was delayed nine times. In the meantime, Hubble broke down, turning the planned upgrade mission into, first and foremost, a repair mission! 🦾 @astro_JFrancois was selected even though it wasn’t officially “his turn” to fly again. His expertise made him the most qualified astronaut to handle the delicate robotic operations critical to the mission’s success. Highlights of the mission: - While flying in formation with Hubble, capturing the telescope (worth six billion dollars!) using the Shuttle’s robotic arm and secure it in the payload bay. - Assisting spacewalkers by positioning them with extreme precision. Jean-François operated the robotic arm for all three EVAs, each lasting over eight hours. These remain among the top 10 longest spacewalks ever (record: 8h29). - Releasing Hubble back into orbit, fully repaired and upgraded, a wonderful gift 🎁 to the entire scientific community on 25 December 1999! 📅 What an iconic mission! Fun fact: it was only the third time a crew celebrated Christmas 🎄 in space… Discovery landed on 27 December, just days before the clock ticked over to the year 2000. 📷 Credits : NASA

On 19 December 1999, STS-103 lifted off, launching a mission to restore Hubble’s vision, with astronaut Jean-François Clervoy (our Ambassador) on board! The objective of the mission was to service and repair the Hubble Space Telescope, restoring its full scientific capabilities and extending its operational life. “I was tense and my heart rate must have risen higher in the simulator. But, as I recall, when I was doing this job in space, I was in my element.
