Today I attended an event in LA with the YMCA of LA and the YMCA of Mexico. The Y’s are establishing joint programs to create well being programs for young people including immigrant children who may travel back and forth across California and Mexico borders. Our state has provided billions to support afterschool programs that great non profits like the Y’s use to support youth and provide them with safe and structured activities. Honored to be able to support this partnership that will support binational students jointly served between LA and Mexico.

We had a great meeting with some of the top leaders on housing in the state. I am promoting a California plan that would create 2 million housing units by utilizing the surplus property owned by school districts in every county of the state. This housing could help many including educators, nurses, firefighters, and working families. School districts need some predevelopment and technical assistance funding to complete the effort so we are looking for public and private dollars to support the work. Earlier this week I was honored to host and recognize 11 California students who have written books. We organized this effort amd a live how to webinar as part of our strengthen literacy effort and invited experts who can help other students strengthen their writing. The students attend grades 5 through 12 and they were articulate, well written, and inspiring. Proud of our students, their educators, and their families.
