Shostakovich's Second Cello Concerto "begins in a dark, introverted mood reminiscent of Berg, pits the cello in a pummelling one-to-one exchange with an intimidating bass drum, and concludes with an exhausted passage of ticks and drones as if an over-wound cuckoo clock has finally exploded. It takes an exceptionally responsive cellist to make sense of it all, and Alisa Weilerstein proved herself to be one of the few who can" ("Bachtrack"). See Weilerstein tackling this impressive piece with conductor Ryan Bancroft and the Los Angeles Philharmonic from April 17 to 19! Read more about Weilerstein below and pick up your tickets today at laphil.com. theguardian.com/music/2015/mar… "

Communicating solely through the sounds produced by their instruments, the musicians of JACK invite one another into musical processes, accepting these invitations or responding in kind with an invitation of their own—and always deciding for themselves how far they choose to go down each path together, before turning back. Georg Friedrich Haas’ visionary Third String Quartet is designed to be performed in total darkness, creating a uniquely physical concert experience. As Haas wrote in his “darkness rider” for this work, “The outline of one’s hand will ideally not be visible even when directly in front of their face. The darkness is absolute, and the effect is disorienting: an audience member feels they have become absorbed in an India ink level of blackness with no visual cues to demarcate the size and shape of the space or their relation to it.” For the Body and Sound festival, @jackquartet, the foremost interpreters of Haas’ work, will perform his String Quartet No. 3, “in iij Noct.” Co-produced with Liquid Music. Co-presented by REDCAT. There will be a post-show Q&A with JACK Quartet, moderated by @CalArtsREDCAT Deputy Director and Chief Curator, Performing Arts, Katy Dammers.

Don't miss Paavo Järvi at Walt Disney Concert Hall from March 27 to 29! Järvi won raves when he led Brahms’ Second Symphony at New York’s Lincoln Center: “When the music built in urgency, Järvi made its outbursts sudden and awesome, with slashing rhythms and harrowingly great contrasts of volume and tempo,” reported "The New Yorker." The acclaimed Brahmsian leads the LA Phil in the composer’s sunny, yet seductive, symphony. Read more at newyorker.com/culture/richar… To get tickets, visit laphil.com.

.@jackquartet brings Georg Friedrich Haas’ visionary String Quartet No. 3 to @calartsredcat as part of the LA Phil’s Body and Sound: Music in Five Senses festival. Designed to be performed in absolute darkness, Haas’ work tests musicians’ ability to communicate solely through the sound of their instruments while inviting audiences to listen in a uniquely physical and, at times, disorienting way. This one-night-only blackout performance by the composer’s foremost interpreters takes place on April 9 at REDCAT. Tickets available at laphil.com. There will be a stand-by line if the show is sold-out. Co-produced by LA Phil Insight and @liquidmusicseries Co-presented by @calartsredcat

In 2019, Tom Hooten—LA Phil's principal trumpet and M. David and Diane Paul Chair—debuted at #1 on the iTunes classical chart with his crowd-funded, self-produced recording of John William's Trumpet Concerto. How did he do it?
