Pandemics are disastrous events which often cause millions of deaths and trillions in economic damages. Preventing them would therefore be hugely beneficial. However, an unsolved problem is how we can develop drugs before the outbreak to prevent the outbreak from becoming a pandemic. Our award-winning proposal lays out a plan.
@SPRIND proposes new technologies that could achieve this. Broad-spectrum activity of antiviral drugs, combined with fast adaptability of these drugs to new targets provide a double insurance value against a diverse threat landscape. Enabling us to have drugs available at least 100 days after the outbreak. Crucially, our study also shows how important it is to not only aim for a curative effect but to also include the capability to block transmission to reduce the spread of the virus.
According to our estimates, the early availability of these drugs in the Covid pandemic would have limited infections and death to less than 1% of the damages we experienced, amounting to a global benefit of $28 trillion.
Today’s investments into these technologies are far too small to realize those benefits. Therefore @SPRIND participated in the innovation challenge of the Market Shaping Accelerator @UChi_MSA to develop a mechanism to unlock needed private investments. This proposal won the innovation challenge after 1 year of detailed work in the accelerator and a final pitch in Washington DC this week.
We thank the whole team of the Market Shaping Accelerator as well as all our partners in the US and Europe and the jury for an excellent discussion of our results.
