This weekend, two of the world’s most sacred holidays overlap on the calendar. Easter and Passover share more than a season — they share a story. A story about suffering endured and overcome, about sacrifice, and about moving from darkness into light. The men and women of the NYPD carry this story forward — not in scripture, but in the streets of NYC. In the safer neighborhood, the crime that didn’t happen, the lives saved. It’s consequential. And the work of building a safer New York is, at its core, the same work: moving people from darkness into light. Happy Easter and Chag Sameach!

Two years ago, Detective Jonathan Diller was ruthlessly murdered in the line of duty while he was doing his job to protect this city. Jonathan did this work without question — he stepped towards danger while others ran away. There is no greater testament to a person’s character than the way they choose to live their life, and Jonathan chose service. Ultimately, he gave his life so that others could be safe, displaying a level of courage most could never imagine. While I am deeply disappointed that Jonathan’s killer was not convicted of the top murder charge, I am grateful that he has been convicted on all other counts. My hope is that the ultimate sentence in this case will reflect the gravity of his actions, and the profound loss he caused for Stephanie, Ryan, the Diller family, the NYPD, and the entire City of New York. Jonathan’s life, his service, and his legacy will forever be a part of the NYPD. May his memory continue to be a blessing. Policing is unpredictable and unrelenting. Cops are put in situations most people will never have to face — moments where there is no stepping back and no standing by. This morning's promotion ceremony honored and recognized those members of the NYPD who have shown exceptional dedication to this work. When New Yorkers call, they answer every time, without knowing what is on the other end. Congratulations to all who were promoted today, and thank you for everything you give to keep New York City safe.

Today, we honored Major Sorffly Davius, a man whose life was, in every real way, a life of heroism. Born in Haiti and raised in Queens, his story is a testament to the New York spirit — taking what you have been given and turning it into something that serves others. Sorffly began as an EMT, went on to the FDNY’s elite Rescue Paramedic unit, served in the Air Force and New York National Guard, and continued that work here at home as an NYPD officer — being a peacemaker in places where peace does not come easily. Yet, for the four uniforms he wore, his roles as a husband and father sat at the very center of his life. He approached every responsibility, whether on a mission or at home, with the same care and seriousness. We honor a life defined by a sustained willingness to be relied upon and to do the work others depend on. May God bless his family, and may Major Sorffly Davius’ memory forever be a blessing.

This NYPD investigation uncovered an alleged plot by Alexander Heifler to carry out a violent attack against Nerdeen Kiswani. Our undercover officer identified and tracked the threat — first online and then in person — allowing us to disrupt the planned attack, take Heifler into custody, and ensure that no one was harmed. Detective First Grade Jonathan Diller lived a life defined by bravery and nobility — even within the NYPD, he chose the noblest and most dangerous assignments, stepping into situations most people will never face. Two years after he was killed in the line of duty, his loss is still felt across this department and throughout the city. Today, we honored Jonathan’s life, his work, and the way he showed up, a legacy that generations of officers will carry forward. To Stephanie, Ryan, and the entire Diller family: the NYPD will always stand with you. Jonathan will forever be a hero of New York City, and may his memory continue to be a blessing.

Police Officer Alain Schaberger dedicated his life to protecting others — first as a member of the U.S. Navy and then when he joined the NYPD in 2001. He chose to serve this city at a time when the evolving risks of policing had become painfully clear, but he still did this work with dedication and a quiet professionalism.   15 years ago, Officer Schaberger was killed in the line of duty while trying to keep someone else safe. That is the danger that the members of the NYPD face when they put on their uniform and respond to a call for help. May his memory continue to be a blessing.

Irish pride was on full display up and down Fifth Avenue! Today, we marched in the 265th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade, honoring Irish heritage and its influence on the culture of our city — especially within the NYPD.

New York City, meet the hero cops who apprehended two individuals charged with ISIS-inspired terrorism last week. Our entire city owes these officers a debt of gratitude. They are a reminder that the safety and security of New York City rests on the judgment and courage of the men and women of the NYPD. On Saturday, March 7, that was on full display. When two IEDs were ignited in the middle of a crowded protest, these officers didn’t step back. They stepped forward without hesitation and without regard for their own safety. They acted on instinct and training to protect people they did not know and would likely never meet. Moments like that remind us what policing truly requires.

30 years ago, NYPD Officer Kevin Gillespie was killed in the line of duty while protecting this city. Officer Gillespie was a husband, father, son, partner, and friend whose life had been defined by service. Before joining the NYPD, he honorably served this country as a Marine. He approached policing with enthusiasm, studied the work, and never hesitated to step forward when something needed to be done. May Kevin Gillespie’s legacy continue to guide the members of the NYPD who now do the work he loved, and may his memory always be a blessing.

Today, the NYPD was proud to welcome 968 new police officers to our ranks. This job isn’t easy — it demands focus, determination, and great bravery in the face of unknown dangers. They are joining a department with a long history, a profound responsibility, and a simple mission: to protect the people of this city and uphold the laws that keep it strong. The NYPD Bomb Squad has conducted a preliminary analysis of a device that was ignited and deployed at a protest yesterday and has determined that it is not a hoax device or a smoke bomb. It is, in fact, an improvised explosive device that could have caused serious injury or death. Further analysis will be conducted, including on a second device. Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi were arrested on scene yesterday and are in custody in connection with this matter. The NYPD is working on this investigation with our partners at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and the FBI through our Joint Terrorism Task Force. I want to again thank the brave members of the NYPD who ran towards the danger without hesitation and quickly apprehended the suspects.

The NYPD mourns the loss of Police Officer Sorffly Davius, who passed away yesterday as a result of a medical episode while deployed to Kuwait in support of Operation Epic Fury. Officer Davius served in the 42nd Infantry Division in the U.S. Army National Guard and rose to the rank of Major. In 2014, he began his service with the NYPD where he was assigned to the 79th Precinct. Today, and always, we keep his family in our thoughts and prayers. May we never forget Officer Davius’ sacrifice and may his memory be a blessing.

I always speak about the police running towards danger when everyone else runs away — that happened today. Officers ran towards a man carrying an ignited suspicious device. They put the safety of others above their own. Today, as always, I thank them for their noble service.
