Today MPs, civic society leaders & artists handed in a letter to the Met police demanding they do not favour the far right over Palestine. The Met has refused permission for the Palestine movement to march on its proposed route for its annual commemoration of Nakba Day on 16 May & has instead given over the political centre of London to a hate march called by racist thug Tommy Robinson. Protest is not some inconvenience to be managed. It is part of the lifeblood of the labour movement, and of every movement that has ever expanded rights, protections or dignity in this country. From my speech on the Crime & Policing Bill.

Last night I voted against the government’s plans to further restrict the right to protest. Freedom of assembly is a basic democratic right in a free society. Successive governments have taken this away. Authoritarianism will not solve the injustices in our country.

Yesterday, the government passed a law effectively banning repeat protests. The government is fed up with people protesting about genocide. Well, we are disgusted by its complicity in the greatest crime of our time. The government wants to silence us. It will never succeed.

The government's "cumulative disruption" powers represent another worrying attack on our right to protest. I cannot be in Parliament for tonight's votes on the Crime & Policing Bill and have been paired. Proud to sign @AndyMcDonaldMP's amendment to remove these powers.

Tonight I voted against the Government’s latest attempt to curb the right to peaceful protest. Time and again, we are seeing hard fought freedoms chipped away, rights secured through generations of collective action now being steadily undermined. This is not a path we should accept nor head down.

Tonight Labour MPs voted to erode our right to protest, handing police sweeping powers that could criminalise sustained strike action as "cumulative disruption." This is a direct escalation against the Palestine solidarity movement that has brought hundreds of thousands onto the streets. It follows the unlawful proscription of Palestine Action, a lost High Court battle they are still appealing, the targeting and failed prosecutions of artists, and over 3,000 arrests for holding a placard opposing genocide. The Labour Party is nothing more than Reform with a red rosette.

Unfortunately, I’m unwell and unable to be in Parliament to vote in favour of @AndyMcDonaldMP’s amendment (to which I am a signatory) to the Crime and Policing Bill. The ‘cumulative disruption’ powers being proposed are a danger to our democracy. It’s wrong that a Labour government is pursuing a policy the Conservatives couldn’t pass.

Just like the vote on proscribing Palestine Action the government prevented a specific vote on the right to protest & grouped this issue in one vote with many amendments that were supportable. Nevertheless I voted against the government plans to restrict right to protest.

Throughout our history, victories of the powerless over the powerful have been made possible through sustained action and protest. Your right to protest is being turned into a privilege granted by the state.
