Neuromelanin then protects dopaminergic neurons from oxidative damage by neutralizing free radicals. The neurons that die in Parkinson's disease are dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. Sunlight through the eyes may be protecting the exact cells Parkinson's destroys.
