@DCGreyMattersUK Dave surely there is a difference between technique and biomechanics. In that technique can be individual based on performer constraints but biomechanics non-negotiables. Even in David’s et al book there are biomechanics.

A useful perspective. There CANNOT be a single optimum movement pattern BUT THERE IS ALMOST ALWAYS an optimum template which individuals are best targeting. I have yet to meet a coach who insists on a single model but often encounter sensible moves toward a mechanical model
Kyle Unitas@KyleUnitas

Through a practical lens, mechanical efficiency is probably best understood as a bandwidth—rather than a single razor-thin target. Within that range, athletes can still move effectively, sustainably, and safely without always hitting the singular “most efficient” form.

What’s Dobble to do with coach development? ‘We perceive to act and we act to perceive’ Player development, to understand ‘skill learning’ is more than just technique. Through sports specific tasks & play: Perceptual (direct & non direct), Decision making & Execution Skills

@Mr_Tennis_Coach Thanks for sharing. I wonder if an approach was taken based on the challenge point / what learning is happening, if that would hit home more than which theoretical perspective underpins practice.

How a coach views skill affects every decision they make. From how they design tasks to what they prioritise in sessions. Here’s what a study of elite tennis coaches revealed and why it matters. 🧵

@drstephenharvey @sportpsychshow @EdCope1 Thanks. If Ed is right that cognitive load theory isn’t just an IP perspective, I’d like to hear views on this from an ecological / direct perception perspective

@Cause1981 @sportpsychshow @EdCope1 There are definitely some tensions, yes, Tom! But knowing your players and appropriately scaffolding tasks is the skill of the coach. You don’t want to have no cognitive load but want to avoid too much. Getting the sweet spot is key of course!

@Mr_Tennis_Coach Congrats Phil. simplification-typically manipulating task constraints ie equipment by scaling rackets, bigger balls etc. Any experience making rackets heavier for serving to reduce the degrees of freedom? Thinking beginners who struggle to establish the grip and action of serving

@Strickomaster @JamyClamp @DCGreyMattersUK Through new book coming we propose a guided learning for majority of players, we believe players aren’t beginners for long, if are we think a coach led approach more appropriate to establish foundational skills prior to players doing more problem solving as thats the game demands

@Cause1981 @HelenBayneZA There are laws of physics. The fact that there are multiple appropriate solutions (recognisable patterns with a bandwidth of variability around them) to a movement problem does not mean that anything goes; there are definitely ways of vaulting that make it harder to succeed.
