His name is Dr Devi Shetty. He was born in 1953 in a small village in coastal Karnataka as the eighth of nine children of a schoolteacher. When he was ten years old, he read about the world’s first heart transplant and told his teacher he would become a heart surgeon. His teacher believed him and tutored him through mathematics for free. He trained as a cardiac surgeon at the Royal College of Surgeons in London and returned to India in 1989. During his first year back, he was in the middle of a surgery in Kolkata when someone called asking him to make a house call. He almost refused because he was a heart surgeon, not a general physician. The patient was Mother Teresa. He became her personal physician. Watching her spend her life serving the poorest of the poor gave him a conviction he carried for the rest of his career. In 2001, he built Narayana Hrudayalaya on the outskirts of Bangalore on one radical idea. If you perform 30 heart surgeries a day instead of two, the cost per surgery collapses completely. American hospitals charge Rs 80 lakh for a bypass surgery. His hospital charges Rs 95000. He created the Yeshasvini health insurance scheme for Karnataka farmers with a monthly premium of just Rs 5. Over 4 million farmers enrolled in the first two years alone. Today, Narayana Health runs 47 facilities with over 6000 beds across India. More than half of all patients are treated free or at heavily subsidised rates. He has personally performed over 15000 heart surgeries. He once said no child should be denied a heart surgery because of poverty. Then he spent 25 years building a hospital chain to prove it was possible. ये कर्नाटक के मांड्या जिले के डासना डोडी गांव के रहने वाले 85 वर्षीय गड़रिया कलमाने कामेगौड़ा हैं। इन्होंने पिछले 40 सालों में अकेले ही 14 से 16 तालाब खोदे हैं। इन्होंन पहाड़ी पर भेड़ चराते समय जानवरों के लिए पानी की समस्या को देखते हुए ये तालाब बनाए। इन्होंन शुरुआत में लाठी से गड्डा खोदा और बाद में भेड बेचकर खुदाई के औजार खरीदे। उनके इस महान कार्य के लिए उन्हें राज्य स्तर पर सम्मानित भी किया जा चुका है। उन्होंन तालाब खोदने के साथ-साथ अब तक 2000 से ज्यादा बरगद के पेड भी लगाए हैं। सराहनीय काम के लिए दिल से सैल्यूट।
