I think there’s enough evidence at this point to confidently claim that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is Tarantino’s best film. I know I just ranked QT’s films and kept Pulp Fiction at #1, but after rewatching OATIH again, it’s clear this is not just QT’s best film, it’s a near perfect film. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood feels like an L.A. daydream tied together by a story of adult male friendship and a dying desire to make it in showbiz. To start, consider that DiCaprio & Pitt are two of the finest actors & biggest movie stars in the history of Cinema. Although they’re each responsible for dozens of memorable roles, Pitt & DiCaprio deliver the best performances of their careers in this movie. DiCaprio’s range is off the charts as Rick Dalton & Pitt’s hilariously unbothered performance as Cliff Booth will go down in Cinema lore. To see such talented actors give their best performances on screen together at the same time is an achievement in and of itself. Equipped with enormous momentum from his two leading men, Tarantino brings 1969 Hollywood to life: the sites, sounds, cars & cultural references of the late ‘60s creates a real nostalgia for Hollywood’s golden years. Mix in an awesome opening scene with Al Pacino, intimate moments with Margot Robbie, and a shockingly comedic, twisted ending, I find myself returning to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood more and more as one of my favorite comfort films. We’re now approaching five years since Tarantino released his latest film & it’s unclear when we can expect his next. But regardless of when Tarantino drops his supposed final film, he’s got his work cut out for him if he wants to top his most recent work because for my money, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is the director-writer’s best film ever.
