In July 2022, a devoted Maryland daycare owner named Shanteari Weems (now Young) faced every parent's worst nightmare: discovering her husband, James Weems Jr., a retired Baltimore City police officer who helped at her Lil Kidz Kastle facility in Owings Mills, had sexually abused children entrusted to their care including grooming and assaulting a 10-year-old girl in the daycare van. Heartbroken and enraged, Shanteari confronted him at a luxury hotel in Washington, D.C. In a moment of raw emotion, she shot him twice in the neck and leg. He survived, but the confrontation ended with her arrest. The revelation sparked a separate investigation. James was charged with multiple counts of child sexual abuse, rape, and related crimes. In 2024, a jury convicted him on all counts, and in 2025 he received a life sentence. Shanteari pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and carrying a pistol without a license. Despite prosecutors recommending less time, a judge sentenced her to four years in prison in 2023. She served most of it and was released in 2025 (with final time in home confinement/halfway house), later expressing no regrets and a commitment to advocating for abuse prevention. What began as betrayal shattered lives but justice ultimately prevailed for the victims.
