The assumption that disabled people have special needs is a direct result of the devaluation of disabled people and disabled lives. A special need is a burden. A human need is not. Ableism is a house of cards relying on faulty assumptions about disabled people.

“Things are so much better for disabled people now than they used to be. You should feel lucky and grateful.” Any gains that disabled people have made are not a matter of luck. Don’t ask disabled people to be grateful for the bias that persists in every aspect of life.

@GaetaAmy Would love to learn what comes from that discussion on the basis of academic ableism.

Hospital worker to me, a disabled person: “Do you have a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) order?” Me: “No.” Hospital: “Do you want one? Me: “No.” Hospital: “Are you sure?” Me: “Very sure.” Hospital: “You can always change your mind.” Would a nondisabled person be treated this way?

Stranger on street to me a wheelchair user: “Repent, have faith and you will be forgiven. Repent and you will walk again.” Disability is not faithlessness. Disability is not sinfulness.
