Everyone top to bottom is getting fucked at the benefit of corporate middle men who don't have a creative bone in their body. It's a scam. The whole thing is broken.

@thecollegehill Most music sources pay 0 or close to 0 anyways so most people depend on donation - ie people who will pay for something they could have for free. You have to realize that from an artist's perspective people are accessing their music basically for free already.

@thecollegehill I feel like we're basically on the same page. The value of a file is in the eye of the beholder. Some will pay 10 dollars for it, some will pay 0. Because of this, direct donation is by far the most profitable.

You actually never have to pay for music in your life ever again here's how:

If you're listening to an artist that gets less than 1-2k plays on Spotify then they are being paid fuck all in royalties and your subscription to Spotify does nothing to support them.

@thecollegehill I'm not disputing that I'm monetizing the files, so is Spotify. I'm just telling you the files aren't truly worth anything. Very few artists make anything substantial from "buying music" directly anymore. We are forced to adapt so you can just have the songs at this point.

@FrequentAudio the means to support art is buying music lol artist Patreons are services by definition and you are absolutely monetizing the files

@seth_str You should read the other things I've posted today, I'm all for supporting artists but the music itself is almost impossible to monetize. We need to kill the idea that a Spotify subscription supports artists, it doesn't. Send money directly to artists where you can.

There is no such thing as "stealing" files that are posted to the internet. You can't steal something that can be perfectly copied near infinitely at virtually zero cost and with no effect to the original version. Traditional economic systems don't make sense digitally.
