@ACTIVISTLAWYER, National Convenor of #JustRightsforChildren, raised some extremely pertinent questions at the conference on ‘#ChildMarriage & #ChildSexualExploitation’. He pointed out that with over 2 lakh cases pending in #POCSO courts across the country, the situation remains grim, and children continue to suffer in silence for countless years. “The law remains a piece of paper unless it is acted upon—this fact is especially important when we speak about serious cases such as child sexual abuse,” he said while speaking at the state-level conference organised by Just Rights for Children partners -- @IndiaCPOrg (#ICP) & Association for Voluntary Action (#AVA) -- along with the State Legal Services Authority, Andaman & Nicobar Islands (#ANSLSA).

In an immensely insightful address at the conference in #PortBlair today, Advocate @RachnaTyagi24, Legal Counsel at #JustRightsforChildren, explained the landmark Supreme Court ruling on Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse Material (#CSEAM) that merely viewing, possessing, or storing material depicting minors engaged in sexual activity constitutes an offence under the #POCSO Act. She also elaborated on why the apex court replaced the term ‘child pornography’ with #CSEAM, clarifying that the former implies a degree of consent, whereas the latter more accurately encompasses all forms of child sexual abuse material, including AI-generated content.

"Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse Material (#CSEAM) remains on the Internet indefinitely, transcending borders and causing lifelong trauma and harm to the victims. To effectively combat the crimes of child sexual abuse and child marriage, we must adopt a whole-of-society and whole-of-government approach. Collaboration between policymakers, law enforcement, technology platforms, and #civilsociety is essential to prevent, detect, and eliminate these heinous crimes against children," said Jyoti Mathur, Policy Advisor, #JustRightsforChildren, at the state-level conference on ‘#ChildMarriage & #ChildSexualExploitation’ in #PortBlair today.

Highlighting the urgency with which the world must address the crime of online child sexual abuse, Ms. @BehuraSampurna, Executive Director of #IndiaChildProtection, emphasized that with 87% of children having access to smart devices, the threat of #CSEAM is greater than ever before. “Today, there is a silent war being waged against our children globally. Online child sexual abuse is not just a crime—it is an attack on their safety, and future. It hinders their development and threatens to cripple future generations. We must act urgently and cohesively, as this is not a traditional crime but an evolving digital crime that requires immediate and coordinated action.”
