Attention youth, high school, and college basketball players!!! Here are 4 ways a Next Play Mindset will make you unstoppable on the court: Transition: Basketball is a series of transitions. Whether you’re shifting from offense to defense or defense to offense, a Next Play Mindset helps you let go of the play that just happened and fully invest in the current play. You can’t control the past, but you can control how you show up right now. Resilience: Turnovers, fouls, and missed shots are inevitable, they are a part of the game. Resilience isn’t about avoiding these mistakes - it’s about responding to them with confidence, optimism, and enthusiasm. Next Play means you acknowledge the stumble, learn from it, and move forward with renewed energy. You bounce back faster because you’re not stuck in the moment that already passed. Being Present: Worry lives in the past and the future – high performance lives in the now. After all, if you want to win the moment, you need to be in the moment. A Next Play Mindset teaches you to leave the last moment behind (whether it was a win or a loss) and be fully engaged in the current one. That’s where performance, joy, and growth happen. Adjustments: The best players in the world aren’t always the most talented—they’re the most adaptable. Basketball is a game of ups and downs. With a Next Play approach, you become a constant recalibrator—adjusting your mindset, your emotions, and your behavior to meet the moment as it is. That’s how you become unbeatable. I encourage you to make ‘Next Play’ part of your team’s terminology and part of your program’s culture. When a teammate misses a shot or turns the ball over – smile, give them a high five or a fist bump – and tell them to move to the Next Play! And no matter what happens… on or off the court… have the confidence, optimism, and enthusiasm to always make your Next Play your Best Play!

Attention youth, high school, and college basketball players!!! I encourage you to develop a Next Play Mindset this season… A Next Play Mindset means you quickly shift your focus from what just happened… to what’s happening now. To what’s right in front of you. To the Next Play. You missed a shot? Move to the Next Play. You turned the ball over? Move to the Next Play. The referee missed a call? Move to the Next Play. Don’t react emotionally or impulsively. Respond thoughtfully and intentionally. When you make a mistake, and trust me, that will happen… Don’t hang your head, pout, or have bad body language. That’s being selfish. Don’t blame, complain, or make excuses. Those are behaviors of the weak. Instead, acknowledge it, own it, quickly bounce back with confidence and enthusiasm… And move to the Next Play!
