From a recent site visit to Instow in North Devon, where the River Taw meets the River Torridge. Drones are an invaluable tool in site/condition surveys as well as capturing some incredible views #architectatwork #architectonsite #Devon

Traditional drystone hedgebanks are characteristic of Devon and Cornwall. They are a bank of earth faced with stone, and often form a living hedge with vegetation growing on top. At this property, traditional patterned drystone banks are still providing robust protection #history

Old Maid’s Cottage is a modest vernacular house, and the picturesque Grade II listed cottage is a well-known landmark in the Lee Conservation Area. It was great to revisit the house recently when we were asked for technical guidance on enhancing fire safety under new regulations.

Working with Exmoor National Park Authority in this beautiful landscape allows us to develop our relationship with contractors, public bodies and the landscape. We are helping ENPA in repairing and revitalising two of their historic farmsteads as sustainable resources #Exmoor

The geometric pool house is buried in the hillside, with only glazing, rubble stone masonry and the feature living Brise Soleil visible. It is absorbed by the landscape, and from the pool there are panoramic views south over the valley. #design #architecture #newdesign

Exploring options for a completely new and terraced landscaping scheme and modern glass extension to a Bath town house. Contemporary design throughout, contrasts with the classical architecture of the townhouse. Landscaping features draw the living space outside #design

In this conversion of a grade II listed barn, significant work was required to upgrade the fabric, whilst retaining its historic character. Historic trussed rafters were not capable of taking the load of a new roof, so a concealed steel structure was designed to ‘float’ over them

Inside this farmhouse renovation, the stair was a bespoke design by JRA. It is a key feature of the large extension blending traditional materiality with contemporary uncluttered forms. The concept features floating treads on a steel frame with a glass balustrade and oak handrail

Barnstaple Long Bridge – with 16 arches and a span of 522ft / 159m is one of the longest medieval bridges in Britain. The Grade I listed ancient monument is a vital thoroughfare across the River Taw. Seen here in the morning mist on the way to the JRA studio. #Devon #Barnstaple

The extension to this Grade II listed Manor is externally in keeping with the historic building. However, inside industrial style wrought iron balustrading and a cast iron mezzanine are a stark contrast. High quality finishes allow them to sit harmoniously with the historic house

Structure resolution - concept sketches for a sliding fully glazed external wall, and bespoke timber trusses supporting a green roof on a garden pavilion. Designs for the building take from vernacular farm buildings, with expansive glazing to draw in countryside views #design

This roof lantern replaced one that was leaking and beyond repair. The central architectural feature bathes the hallway and landings in natural light throughout the day and also supplements the mechanical heating system #design #architecture #historicbuildings

Arches and glass – the beautifully revived West Wall at Pip & Jims in Ilfracombe. Following years of erosion by the ferocious salt-laden winds, the limestone windows were in need of significant repair; with new tracery and mullions and the external protective glazing replaced.
