それに、なんで今の私たちは、クリエイターとしてただ自分自身のままで存在することすら許されていないように感じるんだろう？
これは、自分自身も実際に経験してきたことだ。 2025年に『Varian Color’s Vampire Killers』を発表してから、私はコンベンションに参加して、コミックを宣伝し、読者とも話してきた。
その中で、コンベンションに参加するたびに気づいたパターンがある。 多くの場合、別の黒人の人が私のブースに来て、作品を褒めてくれる。
世界観が面白い、絵がかっこいい、キャラクターも興味深い、と言ってくれる。 でも、そのうち会話の流れが変わり始める。
私たちの間のトーン、空気感、雰囲気が、少し気まずく、不安定なものに変わっていく。
そして突然、あの質問をぶつけられる。
その質問とはこうだ。
「なんであなたのコミックは私たちを表現していないの？」 「あなたのキャラクターは黒人に見えない」 「これはアニメの影響を受けすぎている」
1つまり本音としては、私のアートが、彼らの考える「黒人アートらしさ」に合っていないということなんだ。 そこが一番、私を苛立たせる。
そもそも「十分に黒人らしい」って、創作において一体どういう意味なんだ？ 私は黒人キャラクターを描いている。
『Varian Color’s Vampire Killers』は、私のフェーズ1「The Foundation」というユニバースを始動させる、黒人キャラクターが主役の最初のコミックシリーズだ。
つまり問題は、実際には「表現」そのものじゃない。 問題は、彼らが特定のタイプの表現を求めているということだ。
それは美的感覚だったり、特定の肌の色だったり、特定の文化的な振る舞いだったりする。
