Big 12 insider Drake Toll joined @espnthefan to break down how his perception of BYU has changed:
Q: Where does BYU stand right now in the Big 12 landscape?
Toll: BYU is in a great spot—honestly, better than great.
Football just had an 11-win regular season. Basketball has the projected No. 1 overall NBA draft pick. That kind of success drives NIL, exposure, everything.
But what really stands out is the mission. BYU operates with something bigger than just athletics. That identity—combined with investment—makes them really unique in college sports.
They’re positioned to keep growing, both athletically and as a university.
Q: You’ve been around the Big 12—how have your perceptions of BYU and its culture evolved?
Toll: A lot of it comes down to misunderstanding.
People outside Utah often don’t really know what BYU or the LDS faith is about. There are stereotypes—but once people are around it, those start to fade.
BYU being in the Big 12 helps with that. As people see the program more, they understand it better.
It’s really about exposure—and that’s happening more and more.
