82 kids turned up to this today. We had a whole library countdown from ten before I pulled the winning name out of the raffle, as well as a tabletop drumroll! So much fun. Created a real buzz in the #library - can’t wait for tomorrow!

@Hickesy 160 public library closures in recent years doesn’t help either, alongside often woeful underfunding of school libraries with qualified staff! I’m lucky because my school really value my library and me, but I know a lot of schools are not so lucky and students miss out massively.

So disheartening. Lots of factors. But surely it really comes down to the fact that books are competing against screens which deliver hundreds upon of hundreds of "stories" everyday, delivered in little, easy-to-digest chunks? I dunno, but it's depressing.

The decimation of libraries probably affects under 5s - the age where reading for pleasure is established - more than any other group. Books for little kids are short and expensive, but you used to be able to go to a library and take 5 different ones home every week.
