We have a sacred obligation as a nation to always honor the memory of those we’ve lost — and to support their families. That is the vow we make each year on Memorial Day.

George Floyd was murdered one year ago today. Since then, hundreds more Americans have died in encounters with police—parents, sons, daughters, friends taken from us far too soon. But the last year has also given us reasons to hope.

Today I signed HB 1016, which establishes Juneteenth as a state holiday. We cannot end systemic racism without addressing the role it has played in our nation’s history. Juneteenth is a day of hope, and a reminder of our constant struggle towards equity and justice.

Thank you to all the mothers, step-mothers, grandmothers, animal-mothers, and plant-mothers out there! We would not be the people we are without your strength, wisdom, and guidance through our brightest and darkest times. Be safe, happy, and healthy! #mothersday I miss you, Mom.
