‼️🚨 Breaking News A motion of no confidence has just been formally submitted against MDP Chairperson @mpgapo. It first became evident something was wrong when on 6 April, Gapo deliberately delayed the party’s statement condemning the blocking of newspapers (@DhiyavaruNews was blocked the night before election day). Later that day, he refused to grant an opportunity to one of MDP’s founding figures and the country’s first democratically elected president, @MohamedNasheed to speak at the celebration gathering event. By then, it was clear he had gone rogue. The following day, on the 7th April (yesterday) he removed Legal Director Uz. @ahmedmauruf without explanation. Then just hours later, he also dismissed the elected Deputy Chairperson, @ibreys, through a letter, which was totally unlawful. We also got solid intelligence from our friends in a particular faction within MDP that he was doing this based on legal advice he received from Male’ City Council lawyer Fareed, who had previously been removed from MDP by its disciplinary committee. Then a few hours later, we got more intelligence about plans to remove the Chair of the Appeals Committee Ahmed Afeef and target other key members within the party. Then we got more intelligence from friends in PNC that @MMuizzu also contacted Gapo late Sunday night, offering to release all pending payments owed by Finance Ministry to his company, PestEx. Muizzu also proposed financial incentives in exchange for dismissing loyalists of Anni and Faya, to create internal chaos within MDP, weaken the party and inflict lasting damage, which he appears to view as his only viable path or even a slim chance, to secure 2028. Then yesterday Deputy Speaker @MP4Dhiggaru also, in the middle of the coup, called Gapo to assure him that any civil cases brought forward by members of Faya faction in relation to yesterday’s decisions would ultimately be resolved in his favour. Given these developments, it is clear that Gapo no longer commands the confidence of the majority of Qaumee Majlis members. Many members like @HajjaUaan, @Roxeyna and @Mraee12 expressed these concerns in the group too. This is why the motion of no confidence has now been submitted.
