The Libyan Ministry of Defense has successfully boarded the damaged Russian LNG tanker Arctic Metagaz and secured it to a tugboat dispatched from the port of Misrata. The vessel is now under Libyan control and is being towed away from the coast to eliminate any potential threat to Libyan territorial waters and coastal areas.
The damaged Russian LNG tanker Arctic Metagaz is now drifting approximately 35 km off the coast of Zuwara, and has become clearly visible from the shoreline.
Local activists and residents have issued urgent warnings of a potential major environmental disaster if authorities fail to secure or tow the unmanned vessel soon, citing the risk of a catastrophic spill from its remaining cargo of around 62,000 tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and roughly 900 tonnes of diesel fuel.
