@MaxSportsStudio @RobertStock6 You are asking me about a decision made 20 years ago, and that preceded me by 10 years! But I can guess that with FF, FT, FS, FC, that the hierarchy was to use "Fast" as the first character, and then 4-seam, 2-seam, splitter, cutter as the 2nd character

Calling these orange pitches sinkers is what makes for this fun blip in the "best sinker movement" chart. One good reason to make your own pitch classification system instead of rely on statcast's version if you want some clean pitch modeling.

But for fastball: SI = FT = two-seam fastball FF = four-seam fastball
