most people think claude code is expensive because it normally uses anthropic's API🤫 but you can run it completely FREE on your own pc using ollama here's the full setup: step 1: install ollama > ollama is what lets you run AI models locally - for windows download ollama and install it - for mac/linux install ollama from the official site after installation, check that it works: ollama --version step 2: download a coding model > choose based on your hardware: - for 8GB RAM use llama3.2:3b - for 16GB RAM use qwen2.5-coder:7b - for 32GB+ RAM use qwen2.5-coder:32b example: ollama pull qwen2.5-coder:32b wait for the model to finish downloading step 3: install Ccaude code > install claude code using the official installer for your operating system > then verify it by using this command: claude --version step 4: connect claude code to ollama set these environment variables: ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=ollama ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=http://localhost:11434 ANTHROPIC_API_KEY="" > this tells claude code to use your local ollama server instead of Anthropic's cloud step 5: start claude code > move into your project folder: cd your-project > launch Claude Code with your model: claude --model qwen2.5-coder:32b or claude --model llama3.2:3b that's it, if something breaks: - Connection refused run ollama serve - Model not found run ollama list - Claude command missing restart terminal - Login prompt appears recheck environment variables what you will get: - no API key - no monthly subscription - no rate limits - full privacy - offline support - your code never leaves your machine you can build websites, fix bugs, refactor projects, generate documentation and work with AI completely locally pretty insane that this setup costs $0 in 2026 bookmark this for later
