Today’s Supreme Court decision effectively guts a key pillar of the Voting Rights Act, freeing state legislatures to gerrymander legislative districts to systematically dilute and weaken the voting power of racial minorities - so long as they do it under the guise of “partisanship” rather than explicit “racial bias.” And it serves as just one more example of how a majority of the current Court seems intent on abandoning its vital role in ensuring equal participation in our democracy and protecting the rights of minority groups against majority overreach. The good news is that such setbacks can be overcome. But that will only happen if citizens across the country who cherish our democratic ideals continue to mobilize and vote in record numbers - not just in the upcoming midterms or in high profile races, but in every election and every level.

I think younger gays/trans gals cannot appreciate just how much of a warrior Madonna was for us in the 80s. You have to understand Democrats were not publicly pro gay in this era. Politicians were largely silent on the AIDS crisis. We had no real representation on television or in popular culture. So here comes this absolute warrior in the mainstream embracing ballroom culture and drag. Unapologetically saying in the media every single chance she could get that gay people deserved respect and civil rights. And the media, especially the right wing media, absolutely destroyed her for it. She was targeted relentlessly in the late 80s and 90s. Rush Limbaugh blasted her nonstop. National review called her the antichrist on the cover. They fought tirelessly to censor her music. And Madonna never blinked. I love Madonna for so many reasons. But when other queer people call her “mother,” it is out of absolute reverence. She fought for us to have a space in American culture in a way no one ever had and no one ever will again.
