Several times in the last 2 years in particular Ive found myself wondering whether the sport and artistic medium of pro wrestling, the various genres within, have passed me by and whether or not it’s outgrown me, or I it. Specific overarching company and talent related controversies have naturally contributed massively to this, but also my own time commitments, evolving tastes, and an ever changing personal work / life balance. At different times of year I struggle massively, where for most of my childhood, adolescent and adult life – professional wrestling has been the ultimate escape. Regardless of surrounding circumstances – WrestleMania was always an event I marked in my calendar and watched in its entirety whenever possible. 2026 was the first year I didn’t do that. I watched night 1 on plus 2 speed - before watching what claimed to be a main event mess. I half watched night 2 until I reached the weekend’s main event – and from moment one I was hooked and engaged. When chips are down, when fan sentiments are ones of negativity or apathy, when all hope for the mainstream number 1 company in the medium looks entirely lost - up steps CM Punk. 15 years apart - similar creatively bankrupt circumstances surrounding the company, and overriding consistent negativity driven and caused by those controlling the organisation yet again - like in 2011 - CM Punk washes all of that away, and not only overcomes all of those sentiments - but provided the best Main Event “closing the show” match I have ever seen since my first WrestleMania in the year 2000 as an 8 year old. 2023 I was fortunate enough to see him overcome an incredibly toxic backstage situation only moments prior to performing, and delivering the match stealing show opener with Samoa Joe. That evening I was even more fortunate to meet the man while online nonsense raged, and he was nothing but incredibly cool to me. 2024 I get to see him in my hometown steal the entire show and press conference without even having to wrestle - topping it off by donning a @celticfc top - Hail Hail - all the while carrying a torn tricep. Thank you @cmpunk ❌❌❌🙏🏼
