Eric Draper (George W. Bush’s White House Photographer) recalling a funny moment he had with the President: One spring day in 2003, I was sitting at my desk when the phone rang. It was Ashley Estes, the president's personal secretary. "The president wants you now. Get up here," she said. I had no idea what was happening. Was I missing a historic meeting? Did a world crisis just start? Ashley pointed me to the Oval Office. The president was standing alone behind his desk, looking out the window. His back was to me. "Eric, can you see it? A duck is walking across the South Lawn," he said. He must have thought it would make a great photo. I walked up next to him, looked out the window, and only saw lush, green grass. A victim of the internet age: pictorial biographies of politicians. In this example, a Tory MP compiled a friendly picture book about the life of his leader, Edward Heath. Featuring Heath in his youth, playing piano, lounging on a garden chair, and so on.

It appears in a sandwich in Fleming’s For Your Eyes Only – sparingly scraped, one assumes, rather than shaken or stirred. It was served up to Bertie Wooster for a bachelor’s breakfast. As Andrew Webb observed in Food Britannia (2011), it is not ‘a product for lavish slathering, but for gentlemanly deportment’. It offered proper English cachet, and an air of refinement.
