Disturbed by reports of yet another human rights lawyer in #China sentenced to imprisonment. Last week Xie Yang received a five year prison term for "inciting subversion of state power" in a hearing which took place without the presence of his lawyers. Xie has been repeatedly targeted in the past decade because of his peaceful work in defence of human rights @ChinaMissionGva

#HongKong: @volker_turk deplores the 20-year jail sentence handed down today against Jimmy Lai. The UN Human Rights Office is concerned that the verdict criminalises the exercise of protected freedom of expression, including media freedoms & association. It needs to be promptly quashed as incompatible with international law. Türk appeals for Jimmy Lai’s immediate release on humanitarian grounds, given his advanced age, health, and the impact of the more than four years he has already spent in detention. ohchr.org/en/press-relea…

Committee to Protect Journalists
The Committee to Protect Journalists on Monday condemned the 20-year prison sentence handed down to publisher Jimmy Lai, the founder of now-defunct pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily, in Hong Kong’s biggest media trial. “The rule of law has been completely shattered in Hong Kong,” said CPJ CEO Jodie Ginsberg. “Today’s egregious decision is the final nail in the coffin for freedom of the press in Hong Kong. The international community must step up its pressure to free Jimmy Lai if we want press freedom to be respected anywhere in the world.” Read more: cpj.org/2026/02/jimmy-…
