Whatever your back to school plan might be, I'd suggest that the first month be spent with the theme of empathy. Try to understand everyone's situation and design the best experience with whatever limitations, restrictions you face. This doesn't happen in a day. It's complicated

I think we need to believe that we can move the learning forwards, and to do that, our frequent, timely and specific feedback is a key player #sd36learn. + so many ways to give a personal touch that means so much. Teachers, I ask you to share some of the ways you ‘feedback.’

As we navigate through this remote learning & digital landscape, many teachers are wondering how to continue the critical work of responsive instruction... How do we capture evidence of learning, online, in a variety of ways?  #sd36learn #remotelearning #Cov19EDU #caedchat

A MSG FROM @FreshGrade... Due to the number of people trying to log in to due to COVID-19 we are seeing some load issues. We are working quickly to get this resolved. We hope to have this resolved later this afternoon or tonight. We apologize for the inconvenience. #sd36learn

@nico1e And it’s not just parents who could use a better understanding!

@KyleMcKillop More parent education might help. I can’t tell you how many think that a grade will better tell them how their kiddo is doing. It’s because we haven’t adequately shown them other ways. CSL from a parent lens is pretty inadequate right now.

@KyleMcKillop @Mme_Mac TOTALLY agree. Told sts they could do a retest if they thought they could improve. Yes but what’s my grade? I didn’t give a grade. Just feedback. If they wanted to not do retest then I’d give them a grade. So hard teaching them grade is not the most important thing, learning is

And what I do know is that we’re on the right track with gradeless assessment. Kids love to learn, but they shut down to some degree when that learning turns from bond to ranking. Give gradeless a try if you haven’t! /6

What our team will reflect on: better modelling & preparing our outliers. What educators can reflect on: are grades necessary? Can grades coexist with genuine mentorship relationships? Or are they harmful to our collective curiosity & to the bonds necessary for joyful learning? 5
