“When friends visit Reno Tahoe, I always ask if they’re up for what I call the most beautiful hike in America. They always say yes, but with a bit of skepticism. But once we hit the east shore of Lake Tahoe, they get it… and by the end, they’re fully convinced.” — Paul Hamill

One of many days when we discovered human remains in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. Though I was saddened each time, I am grateful that my search for my son has brought closure for other families who would have never received answers. The desert is a hard place.

Off the coast of California, a female humpback whale was fighting a battle she could not escape on her own. Heavy crab traps and thick fishing lines were tangled around her body, tail, and even through her mouth. Every movement only tightened the restraints, pulling her further into exhaustion and danger. A fisherman spotted her near the Farallon Islands and immediately called for help. When rescuers arrived, they quickly realized the severity of the situation. There was no way to free her from a distance—they would have to enter the water beside a massive, frightened animal strong enough to injure them with a single movement. They entered the freezing Pacific and began hours of careful work. One by one, they cut through rope, chains, and traps. The whale thrashed at times, then grew still, sensing their presence but not attacking. At one point, a rescuer cutting line from her mouth felt her eye watching him closely—aware, alert, and deeply present in a way he would never forget. Finally, the last line fell away. She was free. But instead of immediately swimming off into the deep ocean, she lingered. She circled slowly around the divers, testing her body, as if processing the sudden absence of weight. Then she did something unexpected—she returned. She approached each rescuer gently, one by one, brushing past them in calm, deliberate passes. No panic. No aggression. Just quiet, controlled presence in open water. The team later described it as one of the most profound experiences of their lives—not because they had saved a whale, but because, for a moment, they felt acknowledged by another intelligent being in a way that needed no language. It was a reminder that connection doesn’t always need words. Sometimes it’s shown through presence alone. 🐋💙

“Jurassic Park” star Sam Neill says he is cancer free after five years of battling blood cancer. He's even planning to return to acting: “It’s time I did another movie.” At one point, his chemotherapy stopped working and “I was at a loss and it looked like I was on the way out, which wasn’t ideal obviously.., [but] I’ve just had a scan just now and there is no cancer in my body, that’s an extraordinary thing. I’m very, very excited that this can happen.” variety.com/2026/film/glob…
