Opinion: “More than ever before, we need British diplomats, spies and soldiers to speak the language of our adversaries. We need universities like Nottingham to be pumping out Russian and Mandarin graduates each year, to work across Whitehall.” 🖊️ Ian Proud ow.ly/N6yw50XwM3X

It costs FCDO a quarter of a million to train a diplomat in a foreign language and over half of them fail to reach the required level, while universities keep shutting down language degrees due to lack of funding.

Today’s #EuropeanDayofLanguages reminds us that learning each other’s language brings us closer together. I'm grateful for language teachers' phenomenal work here, especially in today's challenging language learning environment. Teachers of German are key for the close 🇩🇪🇬🇧 ties!

Uptake of German language learning continues to go down in the UK according to the British Academy: "The biggest cold spots in provision are in Modern Foreign Languages." "Provision in MFL has nearly halved since 2011/12."
Wendy Bennett@WendyBennett21

BA report shows that worst cold spots in SHAPE are in Modern Foreign Languages: French & German single honours degrees are declining sharply, with cold spots in all 4 UK nations. Progress in expanding provision of non-European languages is being reversed. thebritishacademy.ac.uk/publications/c…

Concerning that language learning is less widespread in schools in less affluent areas. Language learning should be an opportunity for everyone, not a privilege. German in particular is an extremely practical & sought-after skill – the highest in-demand among UK employers.
