Your immune system has a memory better than yours. 🫵 The first time your body encounters a new germ, it's called a primary immune response. Since your body has to figure out a game plan to fight the germ, it’s a bit slow, usually taking 7–10 days to really get moving. But a vaccine acts like a rehearsal. It trains your memory cells and puts them on patrol in case that germ shows up. Check out how much faster the secondary immune response is: when your body recognizes a germ it’s seen before, it hits its peak in just 2–5 days. It is still your own natural defence, just quicker and more intense. Did seeing the "rehearsal" in action help the memory part click for you? Let us know!

If you had chickenpox as a kid, this is something to keep in mind as you get older. Shingles risk increases after 50, and many people don’t realize the virus never fully leaves the body. The good news? It’s preventable. Have you talked to your healthcare provider about it?

POV: it’s March break… and the turtles are back, dudes. 🐢🔥 By bodacious demand, Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael return — restored in 4K — for their most action-packed adventure yet... they’re taking over our IMAX screen for three shows only. If you grew up cheering for the heroes in a half shell, this is your sign. Relive your childhood. Introduce your kids to the turtles. Make it a March Break, they’ll love being a turtle. Bigger battles. Bigger villains. Bigger nostalgia. 🎟️ Tickets are on sale now. Only three shows. Cowabunga 🤙 sciencenorth.ca/tmnt2

We’re running a real science experiment in the F. Jean McLeod Butterfly Gallery, and we’d love your help! Butterflies are drawn to different colours, each signalling something important like food, egg-laying sites, or mates. Right now, we’re testing which colours our butterfly species are most attracted to by placing nectar-soaked sponges of different colours and shapes throughout the gallery. This helps us better understand butterfly behaviour and preferences, and the results will guide how we design future enrichment and feeding options. Here’s how you can take part: If you spot a butterfly drinking from one of the sponges, snap a quick photo and scan the QR code on the sign in the gallery. Share what you saw with our Bluecoats, and you’ll be contributing to real data collection happening right here at Science North. Come observe, participate, and help us learn what our butterflies like best.

We all share fingerprint patterns like loops, whorls, and arches. What makes yours unique are the tiny ridge details called minutiae. Minutiae include ridge endings and splits (bifurcations). Their specific number and arrangement have never been found to be identical between two people. Not even identical twins!

Your brain doesn’t just hear. It predicts. 💥 The McGurk effect is a perceptual illusion that shows how our senses work together. When visual information from lip movements conflicts with what we hear, the brain blends the signals and can create an entirely different sound. In other words, what you see can literally change what you think you heard. If you love mind-bending moments like this, you’ll want to explore PHENOMENA: The Exhibition, now open at Science North. It’s full of illusions that challenge how your brain makes sense of the world. 👀🧠
