James Garner was born on this day in 1928. He brought real military experience to the role of Hendley in The Great Escape (1963). He was a Korean War veteran who served as a scrounger himself and earned two Purple Hearts. Effortless, electric. Incredible.

SpyHards - A Spy Movie Podcast
We’re very sad to hear of the passing of legendary spy novelist Len Deighton, author of THE IPCRESS FILE. He was a key figure in redefining the spy genre in the 1960s with a colder, more grounded take on espionage. A true giant of the spy fiction.

THE IPCRESS FILE (1965) — the spy film that put Michael Caine on the map and gave 007 a run for his money. With the passing of Len Deighton, now feels like the perfect time to revisit it. But is it the best non-Bond spy film of the ’60s?
