@RBrookhiser Probably because a lot of people move there from all over the country, including those who aren’t used to significant snowfall. So they clear out the stores out of panic.
English

Puzzling.

@RBrookhiser I lived in Silver Spring, Maryland for about 18 months when I attended graduate school at CUA. A friend told me that Beltway residents will clean out supermarkets and stock up if any snow is predicted. Snow can't be a rarity there like in Texas.

On October 3, 1863, President Lincoln issued a proclamation designating “the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving.” Lincoln’s announcement marked the culmination of a multi-decade campaign by Sarah Josepha Hale to make Thanksgiving into a national holiday.

@liz_july4th @RBrookhiser It was near Maysville, fought on the bank of the Ohio River outside of a town called Dover.
English

@bosskingkool @RBrookhiser Colonel Metcalfe commanded USA troops who arrested the pro-Confederate, who was sent to a Union prison without charges or trial. He felt he had been unjustly treated (and honor impugned), so it was a bit of both—the Civil War and bruised honor.
English

@RBrookhiser Was it the Civil War basically a duel for honor?
English

@RBrookhiser The Union colonel, Thomas Metcalfe (a son of a Kentucky governor). He said “I shall shoot him through the left breast pocket,” and he did.
English

@RBrookhiser My last book was about a duel fought near Maysville in 1862 between a Union colonel and a pro-Confederate civilian. Rifles at 60 yards!
English

@RBrookhiser Maysville, KY, across the Ohio River from Ripley, is a great town, too.
