The fact New Scientist even needs to ask the question "Should we incinerate a planet for treasure?" suggests humanity has taken a wrong turn somewhere. 🌍🔥🪙 Ignoring that 💎are only valuable because of their scarcity tells us something about the state of #journalism... 🤦‍♂️

Putting the sovereign on a tiny raft and bringing a very strong magnet close to it, the coin was repelled and so it may indeed be gold! I am so grateful to my mum for everything she did for our family and the wider community. Without her there wouldn’t be a Physics in the Freezer, and I hope this experiment is a fitting tribute the joy of knowledge that she inspired in me. Thanks mum, we miss you lots ❤️ 3/4

My dear mum passed away in late September - today would have been her 84th birthday 💔 Sorting through her possessions we found what appeared to be a gold sovereign, and I was finally able to do an experiment that I'd always wanted to 🥹 You see, gold is diamagnetic… 1/4

It's time to leave. #Science and #scicomm twitter were not perfect but they were a community. @elonmusk has never understood that, for him it's just a toy to manipulate and break. Join me on LinkedIn - or direct me to our new home!

I would (marginally 🙂) agree that salary sacrifice used in this way is not avoidance... In essence one only receives tax relief on 25%, as the other 75% is tax on withdrawal. The deferred tax may be at a higher rate (change in rate, larger income)... And the investment stimulated may generate a higher overall tax receipt - income is more likely to be spent and the investments made are likely to generate more money to be taxed in the long run. Not to mention giving the person investing a higher income in their twilight years potentially reducing the amount the state needs to spend from receipts to support them than if their income were lower.

Some harder ones: I would say none of these cases are tax avoidance, because in each one a person is making a choice that is anticipated and permitted by tax legislation, and which has actual consequences. Others may disagree.

What is tax avoidance? How's it different from tax evasion? Why can't we make tax avoidance illegal? I have an infographic and a thread:

@graeme_cobb Don't get me wrong - I absolutely love regen and theres something about having the skill to manage junctions without friction! But yes - love the choice especially on the motorway 🙂

What I love about strong regen is the ease with which to maintain speeds within the speed limit on the flat or down hill. There’s much more control with just one pedal vs coast mode in ICE auto’s, for example. There’s never a sensation of runaway, and so I turned off creep mode, too. However, everyone is different and people like choice.

Regen Braking - Why the Multiple Choice? ⚡️🚗🗻🚗⚡️ I don’t understand why electric cars need flappy paddles, toggle switches, B Modes or multiple options for regen braking. I’ve had two EVs and both had strong regen which brought the car to a stationary position. The amount of regen I gave the car was controlled by my right foot via the accelerator peddle. I can coast, I can firmly brake and I can judge how much regen is required simply by the pressure applied to the accelerator peddle at that given moment. It took a while to get used to it when I swapped out of my petrol auto to an EV, but I quickly enjoyed the regen braking. My wife’s MG has three modes which I describe as: ⚡️No regen ⚡️No where near enough regen ⚡️Still not enough regen I keep it in the 3rd mode but it still requires me to press the brake peddle a lot. It’s a missed opportunity not to have a fourth option: ⚡️This will stop the car mode So, why do motoring journalists (and possibly some everyday drivers) love the option of choosing regen strength so much? I just don’t get it. Questions: 🤔Do you paddle/toggle/switch through the modes seamlessly on a trip? 🤔Do have a preferred setting? 🤔How strong do you like your regen? 🤔Do you prefer it to drive like an auto ICE car? Let me know your thoughts, but whatever your opinion, and most importantly, have a great day ahead, folks.

Already have 2. The eV6 and 500e. I’d swap the eV6 for a Nio ET5T if they did them here. Other two would be: also the MG Cyberster and the Renault 5 (but a close runner up would be a Fiat Topolino)

Limiting myself to 4 EVs, so… My daily: Model 3 Performance Family/off road car: Rivian R1S Wife’s daily: Fiat 500e Fun car: MG Cyberster As we can’t get the Rivian over here I’d swap that for the Range Rover P550e, or the new Range Rover EV.

Really excited to see how quickly this technology is progressing! Can't wait to see @gridfaeries x @ecotricity's even larger deployment planned for #WOMAD2025... ⚡️🔋🎶 H/T @RadioWomad

On site with the @BBCBreakfast - ahead of the @MassiveAttackUK gig. It’s the first event of its size to be powered entirely without diesel and following a fab new eco standard known as Act 1.5.  Energy, Transport and Food are the three big areas of focus - 80% of all carbon emissions are in those areas of life.  And this event is entirely plant based - very chuffed to have helped make that happen.  This event sets a new standard for others to follow (hopefully).

@snacksEV @InstaVoltUK @mozzaev @Spikebmth @newt7215 Weird experience a couple of weeks ago. Had to rapid charge at both an A-road services near Weston-super-Mud and at a motorway services near Reading. The 150kW charger at WsM was 12% more expensive than the 350kW charger on the motorway 🤯
