They needed his mind to figure it out on his own, to see if the treatment (this whole movie/act) was a success. You see the ending? He's sitting next to his partner dressed as a patient? So he accepted that his family died and all that, but he leans over to his partner (who's a doc working for the island) and says "you guys get me our of here". Basically the treatment didn't work, and the guards come for him to lobotomize him at the end
