Some form of Hindu Nationalism will be a mainstay in Indian politics for decades primarily because it delivered tangible economic benefits & growth to its people.
Modi is endeared to a massive segment of the population because he gave them toilets, electricity, housing, just basic human dignity... The rise of the Indian middle class & the cities they are pouring into is just undeniable. You can see it with your own eyes as skylines grow taller & businesses proliferate.
The other aspect is the cultural & demographic momentum of an urbanizing India. People are mixing. Inter-region & inter-caste marriage is exploding in major cities. An entirely new demographic is being born that places the Indian identity over parochial identities like caste & region. Various ideologies can benefit from this, but one of the biggest is certainly Hindutva.
I can go on & on about why Hindutva has dug deep (including showing appetite for pounding Pakistan with missiles & offing terrorists at whim inside the country at this point), but reality will unravel as it will. And that reality will surely have a saffron tint to it.

Indians are being carried away by their newly found H!ndu nationalism and jingoism, just like Umahjeet generals were in Pakistan back in the 80s and 90s. A few decades from now, Indians will look back and greatly regret what they did to their country.
