This is not about shaming Britain for its colonial past. It is about fostering a cultural sensitivity and awareness within Britain, which will allow for healthier Anglo-Irish relations moving forward. (4/4)

Through this process, the British government in future years will be able to approach Anglo-Irish relations with a greater sensitivity of historically mandated concerns within Ireland. (3/4)

This is a great piece from @KimAtiWagner about Britain's failure to acknowledge the realities of its colonial past. Much like the Amritsar Massacre, episodes of British aggression in Ireland have long been overlooked in British classrooms. (1/4) theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

A really important issue here raised by @EmmandJDeSouza regarding the issue of identity as outlined in the #GFA. This case again highlights the pressing need for greater emphasis on Irish history in the British education system. #LetsChangeHistory

On Tuesday the Home Office, on behalf of the British Govt launched a full on attempt to reinterpret or rewrite the birthright provisions of the Good Friday Agreement Contending that identity & citizenship are separate under the #GFA - we can identify as Irish but we are British.

Irish history needs to be taught in order to inform young British students about its country's relationship to Ireland, so that future relations between the two nations are based on stronger cultural understanding.

Brexit has illustrated that the teaching of history in the U.K. is flawed. For too long the tempestuous historical relationship between Britain and Ireland has been ignored in schools.
