Today, the Protect College Sports Act advanced out of Senate committee on a strong bipartisan 19–9 vote — a big step toward bringing fairness, stability, and common sense back to college sports. Sen. Cruz and Sen. Cantwell have put together a serious bipartisan bill that puts student-athletes first — all 500,000 of them — with clear rules, real protections, a responsible path for revenue sharing with students and between shcools; stronger NIL protections; and needed guardrails on the transfer portal. It also takes on the bigger threat: a college-sports superleague that would leave most schools, athletes, fans, and historic rivalries behind. For Eastern Washington, that matters. It means protecting fair competition, regional traditions like the Apple Cup, and a system where schools like Washington State and Gonzaga still have a real shot to compete and succeed at the highest levels. The future of sustainable college sports must be in regionally sensible conferences, not transcontinental super-leagues that mock student athlete academic learning and the traditions and rivalries that make college sports special. Congratulations to Senators Cantwell and Cruz for moving this important legislation forward. While today is a significant day, the bill still has a long way to go before become law. I look forward to helping it advance in the House in a way that keeps schools like WSU, Gonzaga and EWU foremost in mind. With the support of President Trump and bipartisan members of Congress, we have a real chance to put make meaningful reforms to get college sports out of its current greed induced chaotic death spiral and restore what makes it special. 🇺🇸
