Loans, and obligations, and mitigations: Harvey Elliott ✍🏻 Should all parties involved in a loan deal receive greater protection? This includes the selling club, the loaning club and the player. Should loans be limited to half-seasons with options to extend in January or summer windows if all parties agree? Furthermore, should obligations to buy be tied to game time? Accepting a 10-game deal seems unreasonable given the potential for a player to be frozen out for almost a year. Is the Harvey Elliott case the trigger for prompting governing bodies to examine this situation and establish a system preventing players from losing a season of their career due to a deal neither buying nor selling club wants to be held accountable. The impact of a lost year of football can be irreparable for some players, and this should definitely be considered. This is also a World Cup year which the player now will have almost certainly no possibility of consideration for. Currently, Harvey Elliott is on loan at Aston Villa from Liverpool. However, his playing time is restricted because making 10 Premier League appearances would trigger a mandatory £35 million permanent transfer. To avoid this clause, he doesn’t play frequently and can’t move to another club because FIFA rules prohibit playing for more than two teams in a season. ▪️Key Details on the Situation: The Clause: The deal mandates a £35m purchase if Elliott makes 10 league appearances, a trigger Villa is avoiding, though he has played in other competitions. ▪️Why He's Not Playing: Unai Emery has largely frozen him out of the Premier League side,, and the player is currently dealing with an injury. ▪️Transfer Limitation: Having already represented both Liverpool and Villa this season, he cannot join a third European club. ▪️Current Status: Despite interest from other leagues, he has remained at Villa, with some reports suggesting he is in a difficult, "unusable" spot for both clubs. This is a highly rated young player, who has already lost significant time with a major injiry in his career without this station.
