I beleive Russia's military is being used to give intel to the opposition while pretending to be support. Syria and Ukraine we can see now are both humanitarian crises. You can think Ukraine is a war, I think it's a fake war meant to draw western funding for things like in Mali.

2010 Kyiv Victory Day Parade The news we got around the time of the Sochi Olympics was Russia had weakened Ukraine's mililtary. Last year, I beleive, I received news that the EU was making laws that restricted Ukraine's industry. So the military and economy was targeted by both.
