This is the nicest thing I saw today. “Priamus polycletes” [sic] in Carl Clerck’s Icones insectorum rariorum (1759). This copy at the @LinneanSociety is from the private library of Carl Linnaeus, and annotated by him.

Originally these photographs were for a magazine article which I wrote, but we didn’t end up going with them in the final article. The NHM London had a series of postcards in the early 20th century, and I wanted to see how many of the subjects still remained around the building.

Going to Paris next May. It’s only taken 36 years. What should I see?

@bookllyfr Unusually, it seems like a fine city for the standard touristy things. I may do just this.

@WillBeharrell I took my then 11yo up as high as you can go in the Eiffel Tower, all the way down into the Catacombs, and along the Seine with Bateaux-Mouches: as generically touristy as you can get, and we enjoyed it all.

@ITattum That sounds rough, but your library’s loss was another’s gain! Well done for rehoming them.

@WillBeharrell Many years ago when I finally thought I was established in a long term job I collected together some of my most precious books in a bedsit in Streatham . When I lost my job the library inherited a collection of history and classics books.

One of the greatest challenges of having to massively downsize at retirement is having to let go of some of the books that have accompanied you since you were first a student. Bought in Foyles 6 weeks after my 18th birthday- my first visit.

@ITattum Librarians have a philosophical attitude to books I think. You never really own them 😉

@WillBeharrell We have another month to move out so plenty of time and options. At least I can save 500😊
