There’s a mom at our school drop-off. Messy bun, always three minutes late, kids usually eating dry cereal out of a Ziploc. The "Pinterest moms" always whispered about her. I honestly felt a little bad for her. Then one day at the playground, my neurodivergent son had a massive, violent sensory meltdown. I’m sitting in the dirt, crying, totally paralyzed. The "perfect" moms just stared and pulled their kids away. Suddenly, she’s there. The messy mom. She drops her giant bag, sits right in the dirt next to us, pulls a heavy sensory toy out of her purse, and calmly shields my son from the crowd. No panic. No judgment. He regulated in three minutes. I was speechless. We had coffee after. She told me her house is a disaster and she has severe ADHD, but she knows exactly what a nervous system collapse looks like. I asked her how she deals with the judgmental stares from the other moms. She took a sip of her cold coffee and said: "Perfect moms know how to bake organic muffins. Chaotic moms know how to survive the trenches." Every time I see her running late now, I just smile. Girls, be like the messy mom. Stop apologizing for your chaos.

Even today there are tombs to be opened, and often the stones sealing them are so heavy and so closely guarded that they seem to be immovable. Some weigh heavily on the human heart, such as mistrust, fear, selfishness and resentment; others, stemming from these inner struggles, sever the bonds between us through war, injustice and the isolation of peoples and nations. Let us not allow ourselves to be paralyzed by them! #Easter

This story and headline is a perfect example of how racist politics and narratives are subtly deployed in media. Blink and you miss it. On Thursday, a man killed four children in an attack inside a nursery school in the Ugandan capital of Kampala on Thursday. It was the most horrific attack on a kindergarten school in Uganda in recent memory. The attacker “brutally stabbed and killed four juveniles,” with a knife police said. Nearly all Uganda media reports said the murderer used a knife. However, in AP’s telling, he became a “machete wielding” attacker. It doesn’t make the tragedy any less, but the the word "machete" often carries cultural baggage in Western (and sometimes global) media framing. It often evokes images of chaotic violence in tropical or African settings –think the "wild savage" trope from colonial-era storytelling –more readily than a "knife" does for similar attacks elsewhere. And thus it conjures up an image of Kampala, or Uganda for that matter, as a place with menacing “natives” walking around with deadly machetes, rather than an individual who might be been mentally ill. Surprising how strong the instinct to fall back on these tropes remains.

But my father-in-law folded me into a ritual he once reserved only for his sons. In that small, steady gesture, he was saying something profound without needing many words: “You’re mine too. Let me take care of you.” I’m still learning how to receive that kind of love without tensing up, without waiting for the other shoe to drop. Slowly, I’m discovering what it feels like to be someone’s daughter in the most ordinary, beautiful ways. And every full tank reminds me I’m home.

filling the tank isn’t just about gas for him. Whether we’re rushing off or lingering, he makes sure our car is ready for the road ahead. If we leave too quickly for him to do it in person, an e-transfer quietly appears in my account. It’s such a simple, consistent act, yet it carries a depth I wasn’t prepared for. Growing up without parents, I only knew love that came with strings, or love that required me to be the caretaker, never the one being cared for. I was used to anticipating everyone else’s needs, bracing for what might be expected in return. Practical, everyday provision felt foreign like a language I had never learned to speak, let alone receive.

The first weekend I dropped the kids off at my in-laws' without my husband, something quietly shifted in how I saw family. As I prepared to leave, my father-in-law did what he’d always done for his son, he looked at me and said, “Let’s go fill up your tank.” I quickly told him I’d already done it on the way there, hoping to avoid the offer. He gently but firmly replied, “Never do that again.” Since then, I’ve come to understand that…

It’s shocking how openly and repeatedly the Western media tells you that they simply don’t consider brown people to be human. Among the first casualties of this war were 160 Iranian schoolchildren, but it takes a lost US pilot to bring a human dimension to the slaughter?
Hamza Yusuf@Hamza_a96

“It brings a human dimension to the war…” says Sky News’ military analyst about a missing American pilot from an F-15 jet. Has Sky News ever raised that same human dimension about the US and Israel’s carpet bombing of Gaza, Lebanon and Iran?

Let me explain. This is their way of saying "we'll use the time before 2012 to add voters because we don't have the records." They know reregistration isn't possible and Kenyans will fight it. Then they'll be like "okay". And that's their go ahead to add voters.

Truly incredible stuff here. This is such an egregious error for the A section of the NYT (not a typo, genuinely not knowing what NATO stands for) that it should lead every piece on the decline in journalism
